Progress log

Route Engine versions

The Route Engine's own version history — the service that picks the best route for a goal or a planned workout, separate from the app release version. Currently on Route Engine v0.8.

v0.8

Smarter, better-looking new routes

Latest 2026-07-09
  • Improved New routes are now built ON the roads you actually ride — the engine picks waypoints from your heatmap and joins them on quiet, bike-friendly roads — instead of routing toward arbitrary compass points. So a 'new' loop is a fresh combination of roads you already like.
  • New Wind awareness: fresh loops are oriented to send you out into the wind so the tailwind's on the way home (and it says so when the wind's strong enough to matter).
  • New Every generated route now shows its elevation profile and surface breakdown (e.g. 80% asphalt · 13% gravel) right on the card, so you can size it up at a glance.
v0.7

Familiar loops and fresh ideas, side by side

2026-07-09
  • New The ride-of-the-day tool now has two sections: 'From your rides' (your regular loops) and 'New routes to try' — a handful of freshly-built loops in the different directions you tend to ride, so you always get a few new ideas alongside the familiar ones.
  • Fixed Freshly-generated routes now show their map on the card (they were rendering blank).
v0.6

Lead with a route for today, not an old ride

2026-07-09
  • Changed The engine now leads with a freshly-built route you'd ride today, rather than replaying an old ride. Past rides are only a last-resort fallback.
  • New Interval days get a real loop that fits the session: a full target-distance loop that rides out to a matching climb (or flat), does the effort ground, then loops home — so there's an actual place to do the work, at the right total distance, instead of a stubby out-and-back or a generic loop.
v0.5

Built from where you actually ride lately

2026-07-09
  • New The engine now leans on your recent heatmap: it builds the set of roads you've ridden in the last ~90 days and strongly prefers routes made of those roads. Your regular loops rise to the top ("a regular of yours — ridden 4× lately"), and even a freshly-built loop is judged by how much of it is on roads you ride ("mostly on roads you ride — 72%").
  • Changed Recommendations now favour recent riding: the engine looks at your last 90 days first (widening only if it needs more), so a route reflects where you ride now, not a one-off from years ago.
v0.4

Only real, rideable loops from your door

2026-07-09
  • Fixed The engine no longer recommends junk. It now only considers real rideable loops from home — indoor/trainer rides, rides from trips abroad, and one-way commutes are filtered out (they were polluting every recommendation).
  • New Fresh loops: the engine now builds new loops from your door at about the right distance, biased toward the directions you actually ride, via the routing engine — so there's always a clean, real route even when your history has nothing to reuse.
  • Changed Effort venues must sit naturally inside the ride now (no more "ride 17 km out to do 30/30s"); if no climb/flat is close enough, you get a good loop instead of a contrived one.
v0.3

Terrain-aware routes with local effort venues

2026-07-09
  • New The engine now discovers your local effort venues — real nearby climbs and flat drags with known elevation, found by routing spokes out from home in the directions you actually ride — and anchors an interval session's route to the one that fits its efforts. A VO2 or threshold ride becomes an out-and-back loop to the right climb, with the tactical cue ("do your efforts on the E climb — 0.8 km at 6.6%, 17 km from home") instead of a resurfaced old ride.
  • New Terrain detection: routes now carry a real elevation profile, so the engine can see where the climbs and flat stretches are and verify a route actually supports the session's efforts — rather than guessing from total climbing.
  • Changed Honest scoping. Easy sessions (endurance, long) no longer claim a perfect-terrain match — they're offered as "a good 90-minute loop" — while the terrain intelligence is spent where it matters, on interval and climb days.
v0.2

Routes built for your planned workout

2026-07-09
  • New Workout mode — the engine now reads a planned session (its kind, duration and interval structure) and recommends a route built for it, not just a free ride-of-the-day. Recommendations are generated in the background after a plan is built.
  • New Climb-anchored candidates — for climb/threshold/VO2 sessions the engine matches a real catalogued climb (by length and gradient) to the session's efforts and builds a home→climb→home loop around it, so the intervals land on the right terrain.
  • Improved Every planned ride now shows its recommended route on the workout page (replacing the old example map); until the engine has found one it shows a 'finding your route' placeholder.
v0.1

Ride-of-the-day from your history

2026-07-09
  • New First Route Engine — pick a goal (recovery, endurance, intervals, hills, long) and how long you've got, and it ranks the best-matching routes from your own ride history 0–100 with fact-based reasons. Deterministic scoring across distance, elevation, start proximity and novelty.
