How to read the wind forecast for cycling (and stop riding into it both ways)

Every cyclist knows the joke: it's a headwind both ways. It isn't, of course — but the feeling is real, and it comes from a genuine asymmetry in how wind treats a rider. The forecast that says "wind: 20 km/h" is telling you far more about your ride than about your washing line — if you know how to read it against your route. Here's how wind actually works on a bike, why it punishes you more than the weather app implies, and how to plan a loop that works with it instead of against it.

The short version
  • Wind hits harder than it sounds: what matters is wind speed plus your speed, and the power to push through air rises with the cube of that combined speed.
  • Ride out into it: headwind on fresh legs, tailwind home. Never bank a tailwind you have to repay when you're cooked.
  • Read three numbers: sustained speed (how hard), gusts (how sketchy), direction (which way round to ride the loop).

Why wind punishes cyclists more than the forecast suggests

The number in the app is wind over the ground. What your legs pay for is apparent wind — the air actually flowing past you, which is the forecast wind combined with your own riding speed. Ride at 30 km/h into a 20 km/h headwind and you're pushing through air at 50 km/h; turn around and the same air arrives at just 10 km/h. The forecast said one number; your two directions experience 50 and 10.

Now the cruel part: the power needed to overcome aerodynamic drag rises roughly with the cube of that airspeed. Doubling the air coming at you doesn't double the aero cost — it multiplies it several times over. This is why a "moderate" headwind can wipe 8–10 km/h off your cruising speed while the matching tailwind gives back far less than it took, and why the both-ways-headwind feeling isn't paranoia: the out-and-back genuinely costs more total energy on a windy day than on a calm one, even though the wind "evens out" on paper.

Headwind out, tailwind home — always

The single most useful wind habit costs nothing: start your loop into the wind. The reasons stack up. You fight the headwind on fresh legs and glide home as they fade. A tailwind start silently flatters you into riding further and faster than planned — then presents the bill, with interest, on the return. And if anything goes wrong late in the ride — a bonk, a mechanical you can nurse, fading light — you want the wind pushing you toward home, not barring the door. Tailwind-home also simply ends the ride well, and rides you enjoy finishing are rides you repeat.

Reading the forecast like a rider

Sustained speed

The headline number — the average wind over ten minutes or so. This sets how hard the exposed stretches will be. Check it at ride time, not just at 9 a.m.

Gusts

The peaks on top of the average. A 20 km/h wind gusting 45 is a very different ride from a steady 20 — gusts are what grab deep wheels and push you off your line. A gust figure ~2× the sustained speed is the red flag.

Direction

An arrow (or "NW") telling you where the wind comes FROM. Lay it over your planned loop: which legs are headwind, which are cross, and — the detail that matters — which way round to ride.

The hourly trend

Wind typically builds through the morning and peaks early-to-mid afternoon. A loop that's grim at 2 p.m. can be lovely at 7 a.m. — sometimes the fix is the start time, not the route.

The direction step is where most riders stop short. Don't just note "westerly" — trace your planned loop and mark each leg as head, tail or cross. A classic mistake is planning a loop where the long, exposed, dead-straight section happens to run due west on a westerly day. Sometimes rotating the same loop to start from a different point, or riding it the other way round, turns a grim day into a fine one.

What each wind speed actually feels like

Rough rules of thumb for a solo road rider trying to hold ~30 km/h on the flat. All figures are approximate — position, terrain and shelter move them a lot.

Crosswinds: the group rider's exam

A pure headwind is honest work; a crosswind is tactics. Wind from the side pushes the sheltered pocket behind each rider diagonally off their wheel — which is why hard groups form echelons, staggered diagonal lines across the road, each rider tucked to the leeward side of the one ahead. The brutal arithmetic: an echelon is only as wide as the road, and once it's full, everyone behind is in a single-file line of misery in the gutter with no shelter at all. If your group ride crosses open, exposed roads on a windy day, position before the turn onto the crosswind section is everything — the split happens in the first 30 seconds. Solo, the crosswind lesson is simpler: it's the direction that makes gusts dangerous, so on a heavy-gust day leave the deepest wheels at home and keep a relaxed grip on the bars.

Put the wind on the map before you ride

All of this is easier when the forecast is drawn on the route instead of held in your head.
