Slovenia's sportives and gran fondos: Maratona Franja and the events worth a trip

The Moveee team

Free coaching · a real route for every ride

Slovenia has one sportive that people travel for, Maraton Franja, and a handful of others that are worth building a trip around if you are coming anyway. This is the calendar as it stood for 2026, with the numbers the organisers publish and an honest view of what each one is for. Dates shift by a week or so between years; check the organiser's site before booking anything, and read our Slovenia overview for the roads themselves.

Maraton Franja, Ljubljana: the one to travel for

The first Franja was ridden in 1982 by about 700 people from the police school at Tacen, organised by the Rog cycling club, which still runs it. It is named after the wartime partisan hospital hidden in a gorge near Cerkno, because the route passes the road sign to it. It moved its start to the BTC City shopping district in Ljubljana in 2003, and in 2010 it joined the UCI's world series of amateur marathons. The 2026 edition was the 45th.

The main event is the gran fondo: 156 km, starting at 9:00 on Sunday 14 June 2026 and looping west out of Ljubljana through Vrhnika, Logatec, Idrija and Cerkno, over the Kladje pass, and back through Škofja Loka. The organisers' route description gives two climbs that matter. The Vrhnika hill early on is 4.6 km at 4.1% with a maximum of 7%, which is a warm-up. Kladje, from Cerkno at about 87 km, is 7 km at 6.3% with pitches of 10%, and it is the race. What follows is a 10 km descent that the organisers describe as dangerous, with sections of poor road surface; the road is closed to traffic from Cerkno over Kladje to Trebija between 10:40 and 15:00, and the descent is where the medical staff earn their money every year. A 33 km/h average gets you home at 13:41; 43 km/h, which is the front group, at 12:36.

The same morning has the Triglav medio fondo, 97 km, starting at 10:30 from the same place and going out through Dobrova, Horjul and Lučine to Gorenja vas, then joining the gran fondo's return through Škofja Loka. It has no Kladje, but the organisers warn about the sharp left-right entry into Škofja Loka at 61 km, where a bunch arrives fast. The day before there are shorter family events and the Barjanka, a ride across the Ljubljana marshes with a gravel flavour to it.

The honest view: Franja is a race for the first 500 riders and a very large, very well-organised club run for everyone else, on closed roads through the middle of the country. The 156 km is worth the trip. Pace it as a two-climb day rather than a rolling one, because the 60 km of valley between Vrhnika and Cerkno is where people spend the legs they need for Kladje. Our gran fondo pacing guide is the method, and the Kladje climb itself is described in our post on the Idrija and Cerkno hills.

Juriš na Vršič, Kranjska Gora: the hill climb

Juriš na Vršič, "the charge on Vršič", is a mass-start hill climb up the country's highest road pass, organised by the Kranjska Gora tourist association. The 2026 edition, on Saturday 29 August, was the 47th. It starts from the ski slopes in the village at 810 m, rolls through the town to a timed start at the edge of it, and finishes on the pass at 1,611 m: 13.5 km in all, 11 km timed, 801 m of altitude gain, an average gradient of 7.25% and a maximum of 10.8%. Pre-registration was €28 and entry on the day €35, with chip timing and results in the afternoon.

The organisers describe it as a gathering of families, couples and friends as much as a race, and that is what it is: a few hundred riders, most of them Slovenian, on a road that is closed to cars for the morning. If your summer trip to the Julian Alps can land on the last weekend of August, it is the best way to ride Vršič. The pass, the cobbles and the base are covered in our Kranjska Gora post, and pacing a 40-minute climb is covered in our hill-climb guide.

L'Étape Slovenia, Kranj: the imported one

L'Étape Slovenia by Tour de France is the Tour organisers' franchise event, hosted by the city of Kranj and its tourist board since the first edition on 3–4 September 2022. The fifth edition was on 5–6 September 2026. Kranj's event page lists two main rides, The Ride at 80 km and The Race at 130 km, plus a 34 km business ride and a 12.5 km family ride, and a set of six signed training routes out of Kranj towards Kamnik, Ljubljana, Tržič, Jezersko, Škofja Loka and Bled.

What the host's page does not publish is climbing, and we are not going to guess. Kranj sits at the foot of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, so expect the 130 km to be properly hilly. The honest view: it is the most polished event on the list, with the branding and the finish-line infrastructure you would expect from the Tour's organisers, and it draws the most international field. It is not the most interesting course in the country, and it costs more. Go if you want the experience; go to Franja if you want the ride.

Alpe Gran Fondo, Kamnik: the Alpine loop

Alpe Gran Fondo is the newest of the serious ones, started in 2024 from the main square of Kamnik, the medieval town north of Ljubljana, and held on the last Saturday of May: 30 May in 2026, with 29 May 2027 already announced. The organisers publish three courses with climbing:

  • Short, 15.4 km, 534 m. Kamnik to the top of Črnivec, a hill climb.
  • Hobby, 75 km, 1,454 m. A loop over Črnivec and Podvolovjek.
  • Pro, 130 km, over 2,000 m. A loop over Črnivec, Pavličevo sedlo and Jezersko, which crosses into Austria and back and takes in the three road passes of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps in one day.

The Pro course is, on paper, the hardest single-day sportive in Slovenia, because Pavličevo sedlo out of the Logar valley is the steepest well-known pass in the country. The honest view: it is a young event in a spectacular corner of the Alps, and it is the one on this list most likely to grow. Late May is early for the passes; if the spring has been snowy, check the organisers' course notes in the week before.

Poli maraton, Ptuj: the big flat one

The Poli maraton is the largest recreational cycling event in the country by numbers: the Ptuj tourist board says up to 6,000 riders a year. It is organised by the Perutnina Ptuj cycling team and its parent company, the poultry producer of the same name, and starts from their headquarters in Ptuj on the Drava plain in the east. The 2026 edition was on 30 May, with a 52 km Maxi Poli, a 21.2 km Mini Poli and a 2 km children's ride.

The honest view: it is flat, it is a party, and it is a good first event for someone who has never pinned on a number. It is not a race and nobody treats it as one. If you have a partner or a child who wants to do an event alongside your Franja, this is the one.

Organisers' figures for the 2026 editions. Franja's total climbing is not stated on its route page, so only the two named climbs are given.

Two practical points. Franja and the Alpe fall in the two weeks either side of the start of June, so they make a natural pair for a fortnight in the country, with Vršič and the Soča valley in between; our event-week logistics guide covers the travel. And every one of these courses is on public roads you can ride any other day of the year, which is the best way to prepare: save the course in Moveee's route builder, ride it once in spring, and if spring is not cooperating ride it indoors in Moveee Indoor so that Kladje is not a surprise on the day. The training itself is in our first-gran-fondo plan.
